During the Meiji period, Matsugoro, a rickshaw driver living in Kokura, Kyushu, was a rude and brisk man. One day, Matsugoro rescued Toshio, the son of army second lieutenant Kotaro Yoshioka, and by this chance, he became a guest of the Yoshioka family.
