Rashomon

(Original Title)

The film is based on the novel "In the Bamboo Grove" by Ryunosuke Akutagawa. Rashomon is the main southern gate of Kyoto, Japan. A monk from the cloud, a woodcutter and a beggar take shelter from the rain under the gate. The three make small talk, the conversation begins and the story kicks off: a samurai and his wife pass by a deserted mountain and meet with misfortune. The wife is humiliated and the samurai is brutally murdered. How did the tragedy come about? The murderer, the wife and the witch who borrows the samurai's dead soul to bear witness all have their own stories.

EN: A human life is truly as frail and fleeting as the morning dew.

EN: It's all a lie. Tajomaru's story and the woman's. It's human to lie. Most of the time we can't even be honest with ourselves.

EN: But it's because men are weak that they lie, even to themselves. Not another sermon.

EN: Kill him! Those words were like a wind that threatened to blow me into the depths of darkness. Has such a hateful thing ever been uttered by a human before? Even the bandit turned pale at those words.

EN: If men don't trust each other, this earth might as well be hell.

EN: There is nothing to make a fuss about, in the end, you cannot understand the things men do.

EN: Dogs are better off in this world. If you're not selfish, you can't survive.

EN: Thanks to you, I think I can keep my faith in man.
